Plohophorus was named by Ameghino (1887).
It was assigned to Hoplophoridae by Ameghino (1889); to Sclerocalyptidae by Rovereto (1914); to Glyptodontidae by Lydekker (1894), Marshall and Sempere (1991), MacFadden et al. (1993); and to Plohophorini by Hoffstetter (1958), McKenna and Bell (1997), Fernicola (2008).
