Sarcosaurus was named by Andrews (1921). Its type is Sarcosaurus woodi.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Naish and Martill (2007).

It was assigned to Megalosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928); to Coelurosauria by Kuhn (1939); to Coeluridae by Tatarinov (1964); to Megalosauridae by Romer (1956) and Charig (1967); to Coelophysidae by Welles (1984); to Ceratosauridae by Paul (1988); to Megalosaurinidae by Andrews (1921), Romer (1966), Steel (1970) and Kurzanov (1989); to Ceratosauria by Gauthier (1986), Rowe (1989), Rowe and Gauthier (1990) and Tykoski and Rowe (2004); and to Coelophysoidea by Carrano and Sampson (2004) and Carrano et al. (2005).
