Phyllopteroides was named by Medwell (1954) [(Medwell) emend. Cantrill and Webb, 1987
Type species: Phyllopteroides dentata (Medwell) Cantrill and Webb from the Early Cretaceous (Albian), southeastern Australia.]. It is not extant. Its type is Phyllopteroides dentata.
It was assigned to Cycadophyta by Andrews (1970); and to Osmundaceae by McLoughlin et al. (1995).
