Taxonomy
Albertosaurus sarcophagus was named by Osborn (1905). Its type specimen is NMC 5600, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kneehills Creek, GSC (NMC 5600), which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial sandstone in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation of Canada.

H. F. Osborn 1905Fifteen mandibular teeth, including one small anterior tooth truncated posteriorly.
K. Carpenter 1992(Cranial) Premaxillary contacts nasal below external nares; macrymal horn often better developed than in Tyrannosaurus, and the postorbital considerably smoother; posterior part of the dentary not as deep as in Tyrannosaurus. (Postcranial) Wrist composed of five elements. Postacetabular blade of ilium deep, and pubic shaft straight.

Carr 2010Tyrannosaurid that possesses a narrow in- terfenestral strut of the maxilla; a medial pneumatic recess in the lacrimal; a large posterior pneumatic recess in the palatine, which is deeper than the anterior recess and is at least as deep as the maxillary ramus; a deep choanal process of the palatine.
