Siamotyrannus was named by Buffetaut et al. (1996). Its type is Siamotyrannus isanensis.
It was assigned to Allosauroidea by Rauhut (2003); to Carnosauria by Holtz et al. (2004); to Tyrannosauroidea by Buffetaut et al. (2006); to Tyrannosauridae by Buffetaut et al. (1996), Buffetaut (1997), Buffetaut et al. (1997), Manabe (1999), Buffetaut and Suteethorn (1999), Dong (2008); and to Metriacanthosaurinae by Carrano et al. (2012).
