Ornithomimus tenuis was named by Marsh (1890). Its type specimen is USNM 5814 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cow Island (USNM 5814), which is in a Campanian/Campanian terrestrial horizon in the Judith River Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Struthiomimus tenuis by Osborn (1916), Huene (1927); it was considered a nomen dubium by Russell (1972), Makovicky et al. (2004), Claessens and Loewen (2016).
