Ornithochirus umbrosus was named by Cope (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pterodactylus ingens by Marsh (1872); it was recombined as Pterodactylus umbrosus by Cope (1874); it was synonymized subjectively with Pteranodon ingens by Hay (1902).
