Platyostoma tumida was named by Meek and Worthen (1861) [Platyostoma? tumida]. It is the type species of Ianthinopsis.

It was recombined as Ianthinopsis tumida by Meek and Worthen (1866), Harper (1981), Tassell (1982) and Wagner (2023).
