Caprotinidae was named by Gray (1848) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5023].

It was assigned to Hippuritacea by Newell (1965) and Vokes (1980); to Caprotinoidea by Nevesskaja (2009); and to Radiolitoidea by Bouchet et al. (2010), Carter et al. (2011) and Skelton (2013).
