Humphreyia was named by Gray (1858) [m. kosnik taxon no: 8731]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Aspergillum (Humphreyia) by Tate (1887).

It was assigned to Aspergillum by Tate (1887); to Clavagellidae by Cox et al. (1969), Vokes (1980), Lamprell and Healy (1998); to Penicillidae by Morton (2007); and to Humphreyiidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
