Murex turbinellus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Vasum, Vasum (Vasum).
It was recombined as Vasum (Vasum) turbinellus by Perrilliat (1987); it was recombined as Vasum turbinellus by Röding (1798), Kosnik (2002) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
