Messapicetus longirostris

Taxonomy
Messapicetus longirostris was named by Bianucci et al. (1992) [Museum of Gruppo Naturlisti Salentini, Lecce, Italy]. Its type specimen is MGNS, no number, a partial skull (skull lacking the auditory bones, teeth and mandibles), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cisterna Quarry, which is in a Tortonian transition zone/lower shoreface lime mudstone in the Pietra Leccese Formation of Italy.

Bianucci et al. 2016Messapicetus longirostris differs from M. gregarius in the lesser posterior extension of the dorsomedial closu- re of the mesorostral groove by the premaxillae; lacking a distinct maxillary tubercle and prominential notch; the more slender prema- xillary crest; the more gradual posteroventral descent of the medial margin of the maxilla from the vertex; and the presence of two or three dorsal infraorbital foramina on the right maxilla (contra only one foramen in M. gregarius).
