Sachalinocetus cholmicus was named by Siryk and Dubrovo (1970) [In the text, the name is attributed to Dubrovo only, rather than both authors.]. Its type specimen is AH CCCP 2798/1-12, a partial skeleton (skull & partial skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sakhalin, which is in a Miocene/Miocene marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
