Balaenoidea was named by Flower (1865). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gill (1873).
It was synonymized subjectively with Mysticete by Gill (1873); it was misspelled as Balaenoidae by Hay (1930), Mitchell (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by McKenna and Bell (1997).
It was assigned to Mysticete by Gray (1868), Gray (1871); to Mysticete by Hay (1930); to Mysticeti by Sanders and Barnes (2002), Bisconti (2003), Gingerich (2005); to Mysticeti by Bianucci and Landini (2007), Rice (2009); to Chaeomysticeti by Mitchell (1989), Steeman (2007), Bisconti (2008), Steeman (2010), Bisconti (2012); and to Balaenomorpha by Geisler and Sanders (2003), Bisconti et al.
