Taxonomy
Ziphius planirostris was named by Cuvier (1824) [The type locality of Ziphius planirostris is not clear. Owen (1870) says that it is from the "middle Crag" at Antwerp]. Its type specimen is lectotype = MNHN CLB 22, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Choneziphius planirostris type locality, which is in a Serravallian/Tortonian marine horizon in Belgium.
It was recombined as Chonoziphius planirostris by Bronn (1853); it was recombined as Choneziphius planirostris by Duvernoy (1851), Pictet (1853), Gervais (1859), Huxley (1864), Scott (1873), Van Beneden and Gervais (1880), Capellini (1885), Lydekker (1887), Newton (1891), Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904), Abel (1905), Capellini (1911), Hay (1930), Van Deinse (1935), Pilleri (1985), Pilleri (1987), Lambert (2005), Uhen et al.
