Sagmatias was named by Cope (1866). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Weber (1928).
It was synonymized subjectively with Lagenorhynchus by Hershkovitz (1966), McKenna and Bell (1997), Mead and Brownell (2005).
It was assigned to Delphininae by Gill (1871), Gill (1872), Weber (1928); to Lissodelphinae by LeDuc et al. (1999), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Delphinidae by Scammon and Cope (1869), Cope (1890), Trouessart (1904), Palmer (1904), Murakami et al. (2014); and to Lissodelphininae by Perrin et al. (2013), Vollmer et al. (2019).
