Taxonomy
Cephalotropis coronatus was named by Cope (1896) [also noted in Cope (1896), Science vol. 3 no. 76 p. 880]. Its type specimen is USNM 9352 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Colony Cliffs, which is in a Tortonian offshore shelf claystone in the St Marys Formation of Maryland. It is the type species of Cephalotropis.
