Taxonomy

Siphonocetes was named by Kroyer (1845). It is extant. Its type is Siphonocetes typicus.

It was assigned to Crustacea by Bate (1858).

Synonyms

Balaena prisca was named by Leidy (1851). Its type specimen is ANSP 12915 and ANSP 12950, a mandible (fragment of lower jaw and a caudal vertebra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is City Point, which is in a Pliocene shallow subtidal horizon in the Yorktown Formation of Virginia.

It was recombined as Balaenoptera prisca by Cope (1867) and Gennevaux and Roman (1922); it was recombined as Eschrichtius priscus by Leidy (1869) and Cope (1869); it was recombined as Cetotherium priscum by Cope (1890); it was recombined as Siphonocetus priscus by Cope (1895), Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904), Case (1904), Hay (1930), Abel (1938), Barwick (1938), Barwick (1940) and Kellogg (1968); it was considered a nomen vanum by Barnes and McLeod (1984) and McLeod et al. (1993); it was considered a nomen dubium by Uhen et al. (2008).
Siphonocetus clarkianus was named by Cope (1895). Its type specimen is USNM 12721 and is not a trace fossil.
