Pachytesta muncii was named by Cichan and Taylor (1981) [The type material may be at the U. of Kansas and consists of slides and peels
The type locality was the Lewis Creek Kentucky, Copeland (Taylor) Coal, base of Magoffin Member of Breathitt Formation]. It is not extant. Its type specimen is Paleobotanical Collections, Dept. of Botany, Ohio St CB 1812.
