Taxonomy

Balaena ampullata was named by Forster (1770) [no type specimen designated ]. It is extant. Its type locality is Maldon, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Lagenocetus latifrons by Gray (1863), Gray (1864), Gray (1866), Gray (1868) and Gray (1871); it was recombined as Hyperoodon ampullatus by Rhoads (1902), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hershkovitz (1966), Moore (1968), Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008) and Ramassamy (2016).

Synonyms

Delphinus hunteri was named by Gray (1846) ["bottle-nosed whale" of Hunter]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Hyperoodon hunteri by Gray (1846) and Duvernoy (1851); it was synonymized subjectively with Hyperoodon ampullatus by Hershkovitz (1966).
Hyperoodon borealis was named by Nilsson (1820). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyperoodon ampullatus by Hershkovitz (1966).
Delphinus diodon was named by Lacépède (1804). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyperoodon ampullatus by Hershkovitz (1966).
Hyperoodon butskopf was named by Lacépède (1804). It is extant.

It was corrected as Hyperoodon butzkopf by Gray (1850), Gervais (1852), Gray (1871) and Scott (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Hyperoodon ampullatus by Hershkovitz (1966) and Mead and Brownell (2005).
Hyperoodon rostratum was named by Wesamel (1840). It is extant.

It was corrected as Hyperoodon rostratus by Trouessart (1904) and Turner (1912); it was synonymized subjectively with Hyperoodon ampullatus by Hershkovitz (1966) and Mead and Brownell (2005).
Hyperoodon latifrons was named by Gray (1846). It is extant.
