Taxonomy

Ziphirostrum marginatum was named by Du Bus (1868). Its type specimen is IRSNM 3783-M.1878, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Deurne (Fort 1), Deurne Sand, which is in a Tortonian lagoonal sandstone in the Diest Formation of Belgium.

It was synonymized subjectively with Mioziphius belgicus by Abel (1905).

Synonyms

Dioplodon hemixem was named by Van Beneden (1860).

It was recombined as Ziphirostrum hemixemii by Vanden Broeck (1874) and Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Ziphirostrum hemixemi by Trouessart (1904); it was replaced with Mioziphius belgicus by Abel (1905); it was considered a nomen nudum by Lambert (2005).
Ziphirostrum tumidum was named by Du Bus (1868). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Mioziphius belgicus by Abel (1905).
Ziphirostrum laevigatum was named by Du Bus (1868). Its type specimen is IRSNM 3830-M.542, a skull, and it is not a trace fossil.

Mioziphius belgicus was named by Abel (1905). Its type specimen is MRHNB 3845, a skull, and it is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Mioziphius.
