Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. H. Reinhart 1951Mandible relatively longer, thinner, less massively built than in Trichechus; strong anteriorly directed coronoid process; dorsal border of mandibular notch thins to sharp crest; pronounced elongation of horizontal ramus between anterior mental foramen and anterior border of vertical ramus; alveoli for cheek teeth decrease markedly, rather than subquadrate with an expanded base as Trichechus; teeth not homodont; three cheek teeth present in type; length of M3 70 per cent greater, width 25 per cent greater than corresponding measurements of comparable cheek teeth in Trichechus latirostris Harland and T. senegalensis Desmarest; permanent diastem between anterior cheek tooth and incisors; trefoil-like projection extends from hypoconid into middle of main transverse valley; hypoconulid more powerfully developed and higher crowned than in Trichechus; lateral side of hypoconulid more strongly developed than medial.
