Taxonomy
Saurophaganax was named by Chure (1995). Its type is Saurophaganax maximus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Allosaurus by Smith (1998); it was considered a nomen dubium by Danison et al. (2024).

It was assigned to Allosauridae by Chure (1995), Holtz et al. (2004), Chure et al. (2006), Carrano et al. (2012).
