Protarchaeopteryx was named by Ji and Ji (1997).
It was assigned to Archaeopterygidae by Ji and Ji (1997); to Maniraptoriformes by Holtz (1998); to Maniraptora by Ji et al. (1998) and Ruiz-Omeñaca and Canudo (2003); to Avialae by Padian (2004); and to Oviraptorosauria by Senter et al. (2004) and Xu et al. (2007).
