Gorgonophontes peleron was named by Schram (1984). Its type specimen is SDSNH 4393. Its type locality is Stark Shale Member, Papillion, Sarpy County, NE (Schram, 1984, Location 2), which is in a Missourian offshore shale in the Dennis Formation of Nebraska.
