Pellegrinisaurus was named by Salgado (1996).
It was assigned to Saltasauridae by Wilson (2002); to Titanosauridae by Salgado (1996), Salgado and Azpilicueta (2000), Powell (2003), de Almeida et al. (2004), Salgado and Coria (2005); and to Lithostrotia by Upchurch et al. (2004), Cerda et al. (2021).
