Taxonomy

Cairanoolithus was named by Vianey-Liaud et al. (1994). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Cairanoolithus dughii. It is the type genus of Cairanoolithidae.

It was assigned to Megaloolithidae by Vianey-Liaud et al. (1994), Garcia and Vianey-Liaud (2001), Vianey-Liaud et al. (2003), Simón (2006), Garcia et al. (2006), Suñer et al. (2008), Sellés et al. (2013); and to Cairanoolithidae by Sellés and Galobart (2016).

Synonyms

Dughioolithus was named by Vianey-Liaud et al. (1994). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cairanoolithus by Garcia and Vianey-Liaud (2001); it was misspelled as Dughiloolithus by Simón (2006), Fernández (2013).

It was assigned to Megaloolithidae by Vianey-Liaud et al. (1994), Simón (2006), Fernández (2013).

Galobart 2016	Cairanoolithus is a dinosauroid spherulithic egg type characterised by the following unique combination of characters: large spherical egg (150 – 190 mm in diameter; EL 1⁄4 0.8 – 0.9); shell thickness ranging from 1.10 to 2.65 mm; nearly columnar-shaped shell units not completely interlocking (H:W ratio 1⁄4 1.5:1 to 2.5:1); horizontal to undulating growth lines; slightly ornamented or smooth surface (sagenotuberculate ornamentation); prolatocanaliculate and angusticanaliculate pore systems.
