Brasilemys was named by Lapparent de Broin (2000).
It was assigned to Podocnemidae by Joyce et al. (2004); to Brasilemydidae by Lapparent de Broin (2000) and Oliveira and Romano (2007); to Podocnemoidae by Cadena et al. (2012); and to Podocnemidinura by Gaffney et al. (2006) and de la Fuente et al. (2014).
