Sandownia was named by Meylan et al. (2000). Its type is Sandownia harrisi. It is the type genus of Sandownidae.
It was assigned to Trionychoidea by Meylan et al. (2000); to Trionychia by Joyce et al. (2004); to Eucryptodira by Joyce (2007); to Angolachelonia by Mateus et al. (2009); and to Sandownidae by Tong and Meylan (2013).
