Dyscritochoerus was named by Gazin (1956) [said by Stucky 1998 to be valid, but he does not cite Emry; Walsh 2000 takes no position]. Its type is Dyscritochoerus lapointensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Brachyhyops by Emry (1981); it was corrected as Discritochoerus by Ferrusquía-Villafranca (2006); it was misspelled as Discritochoerus by Stucky (1998), Foss (2007).
It was assigned to Dichobunidae by Gazin (1956); to Helohyinae by Stucky (1998); and to Helohyidae by Ferrusquía-Villafranca (2006), Foss (2007).
