Theocotyle was named by Riedel and Sanfilippo (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l T Eo-u]. It is the type genus of Theocotylidae.

It was assigned to Theocotylidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
