Polacanthidae was named by Wieland (1911). Its type is Polacanthus.
It was corrected as Polacanthiidae by Naish and Martill (2001); it was synonymized subjectively with Nodosauridae by Coombs (1978), Tumanova (1987) and Galton (2019).
It was assigned to Ankylosauria by Ford (2000), Carpenter (2001), Kilbourne and Carpenter (2005) and Galton (2007); and to Ankylosauria by Naish and Martill (2001) and Kineer et al. (2016).

Kineer et al. 2016 | Inverted U-shaped premaxillary notch; short paroccipital process expanded distally, and rotated to face posteroventrally; suborbital horn a prominent, inverted, oblique tetrahedron; arcuate, flange-like acromion originating from dorsal margin and extending to mid-shaft of scapular blade posterior to glenoid; lateral cervical and shoulder osteoderms elongate, triangular, wedge shaped in cross-section and grooved along posterior margin; lateral body and caudal osteoderms of dorsoventrally compressed triangular plates, some with long distal spine (“splates”); coossified pelvic shield of rosettes formed by large, raised osteoderms surrounded by smaller raised osteoderms. |
