Medfracaulus cooki was named by Rohr et al. (2003). Its type locality is Field Locality 94R-3 (=USGS 79APA82b), which is in a Gorstian/Pridoli carbonate limestone in Alaska.
It was synonymized subjectively with Medfracaulus turriformis by Rohr and Blodgett (2008).
