Jeholosaurus was named by Xu et al. (2000). It is the type genus of Jeholosauridae.
It was assigned to Ornithischia by Xu et al. (2000); to Ornithischia by Ruiz-Omeñaca and Canudo (2003); to Euornithopoda by Norman et al. (2004) and Galton (2009); to Ornithopoda by Butler et al. (2007) and Godefroit et al. (2009); to Thescelosaurinae by Brown et al. (2013); to Ornithopoda by Buchholz (2002), Butler et al. (2008), Barrett and Han (2009) and Dieudonné et al. (2020); and to Jeholosauridae by Han et al. (2012), Alifanov and Saveliev (2014), Madzia et al. (2018), Herne et al. (2019) and Madzia et al. (2021).
