Atreipus was named by Olsen and Baird (1986). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Grallator by Weems (1992).

It was assigned to Atreipodidae by Olsen and Baird (1986); to Ornithischia by Hunt et al. (1998); to Theropoda by Thulborn (1993), Romero Molina et al. (2003); to Ornithischia by Weishampel (2006); to Dinosauriformes by Irmis et al. (2007); and to Grallatoridae by Klein and Lucas (2021).

H. Klein and S. G. Lucas 2021Small (9-14 cm long), tulip-shaped pes impression with metatarsal-phalangeal pads of digits II and IV that are oval to circular and often impressed. Distal phalangeal pads often more indistinct than more proximal pads. Hallux impression absent. Relative proportions of pes very similar to Grallator. Manus much smaller than pes, with digit III longest, followed in length by II, IV and I.
