Taxonomy
Delphinus brocchi was named by Balsamo Crivelli (1842). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Castel Arquato, Monte Zago, which is in a Zanclean shallow subtidal horizon in Italy.
It was corrected as Delphinus brocchii by Pictet (1853), Gervais (1872), Gervais (1876), Lawley (1876); it was recombined as Delphinapterus (Hemisyntrachelus) brochii by Brandt (1873); it was recombined as Delphinapterus brochii by Lydekker (1887), Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Tursiops brocchii by Sacco (1893), Trouessart (1898), del Prato (1898), Pilleri and Pilleri (1982), Barnes (1990); it was recombined as Hemisyntrachelus brochii by Slijper (1936); it was recombined as Tursiops cortesii brocchii by Pilleri (1985); it was synonymized subjectively with Hemisyntrachelus cortesii by Bianucci (1996); it was misspelled as Delphinus brocchi by Capellini (1863); it was recombined as Tursiops brochii by Post and Bosselaer (2005).
