Taxonomy
Proroziphius chonops was named by Leidy (1876) [I am not sure that USNM 16689 is the holotype of Proroziphius chonops, but that is how the USNM database identifies the specimen.]. Its type specimen is USNM 16689, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wando Mining Company, which is in a Zanclean marine marl in the Goose Creek Formation of South Carolina.
It was synonymized subjectively with Mesoplodon longirostris by Abel (1905); it was recombined as Choneziphius chonops by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Lambert (2005) and Bianucci et al. (2013).
