Mammalia - Cetacea

Taxonomy
Palaeobalaena bergi was named by Moreno (1882) [Moreno (1882) does not give locality information, nor does he say where the type specimen is curated. Kellogg (1931) notes where the specimen was collected and that it is at the Museo de La Plata.]. Its type specimen is no type specimen listed, a partial skull (occipital region and cervical vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Banco de Misioneros, which is in a Santacrucian fluvial horizon in the Santa Cruz Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Palaeobalaena.

It was corrected as Palaeobalaena bergii by Doering (1882); it was recombined as Balaena bergi by Trouessart (1904); it was considered a nomen nudum by Ameghino (1894).
