Taxonomy

Diatryma gigantea was named by Cope (1876) [type locality is "New Mexico"]. It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Diatryma.

It was corrected as Diatryma giganteum by Wetmore (1940).

Synonyms

Omorhamphus storchii was named by Sinclair (1928). Its type specimen is Princeton University Palaeontological Museum No. 13106, a partial skeleton (beak tip, skull fragments, left leg, and other postcrania), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is One and One Half Miles Southeast of Dorsey Creek, which is in a Wasatchian fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Willwood Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Omorhamphus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Diatryma gigantea by Brodkorb (1967), Witmer and Rose (1991).
Diatryma steini was named by Matthew and Granger (1917). Its type specimen is Amer. Mus. No. 6169, a skeleton (nearly complete skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is South Elk Creek (Diatryma steini type locality), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the Willwood Formation of Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Diatryma gigantea by Witmer and Rose (1991).
