Taxonomy

Pachyacanthus suessii was named by Brandt (1871) [no type specimen listed in Brandt 1871 ]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hernals, which is in a Langhian marine sandstone in Austria.

It was recombined as Priscodelphinus suessii by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Eurhinodelphis suessi by Trouessart (1904); it was corrected as Pachyacanthus suessi by Pia (1937).

Synonyms

Cetotherium ambiguum was named by Brandt (1872). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Nussdorf, which is in a Sarmatian marine claystone in Austria.

It was recombined as Pachyacanthus ambiguum by Pia (1937); it was considered a nomen dubium by Van Beneden (1884); it was considered a nomen dubium by Pia (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Pachyacanthus suessi by Kazár (2010).
Pachyacanthus trachyspondylus was named by Brandt (1871). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Priscodelphinus suessii by Trouessart (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Pachyacanthus suessi by Kazár (2010).
Pachyacanthus andrussovi was named by Dombrovsky (1925) [Type specimen is housed in the Museum of the Academy of Science, Leningrad.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Manguishlak, which is in a Serravallian marine horizon in Kazakhstan.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pachyacanthus suessi by Kazár (2010).
