Desmostylus japonicus
Taxonomy
Desmostylus japonicus was named by Tokunaga and Iwasaki (1914). Its type specimen is NMNS PV-5600, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bogahora Valley, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in the Akeyo Formation of Japan.
It was synonymized subjectively with Desmostylus hesperus by VanderHoof (1937), Reinhart (1959), Dubrovo and Sinel'nikova (1971), Domning (1996); it was recombined as Desmostylus hesperus japonicus by Shikama (1966), Kamei and Okazaki (1974), Hasegawa et al. (1995).
