Lepidocoleus was named by Faber (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u S Wenl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 784,1129]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lepidocoleidae by Adrain et al. (1995); and to Lepidocoleomorpha by Klug et al. (2008).
