Prothoatherium lacerum was named by Ameghino (1902). Its type specimen is MACN A 52-246, left maxilla bearing P3-M3, a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lambdaconus lacerum by Soria (2001), Kramarz and Bond (2005).
