Spalacidae was named by Gray (1821). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Muridae by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Rosores by Gray (1821); to Simplicidentata by Flower (1883), Flower and Lydekker (1891); to Myomorpha by Gadow (1898); to Spalacoidea by Wood (1958); and to Muroidea by Steppan et al. (2004), Wilson and Reeder (2005).
