Taxonomy
Bellerophon trilobatus was named by de Sowerby and Murchison (1839) [Bellerophon trilobatus de Sowerby in Murchison 1839]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Bucaniella trilobatus by Reed (1904); it was recombined as Bucaniella trilobata by Knod (1908) and Reed (1921); it was corrected as Bellerophon trilobata by Moberg and Grönwall (1909); it was recombined as Plectonotus trilobatus by Straw (1933); it was recombined as Bucanella trilobata by Gillette (1947); it was recombined as Tritonophon trilobata by Peel (1974), Peel (1977) and Ebbestad et al. (2008); it was recombined as Tritonophon trilobatus by Wagner (2023).
