Taxonomy
Bellerophon troosti was named by de Ferrusac and d'Orbigny (1840) [Bellerophon troosti d’Orbigny in de Ferrusac & d’Orbigny 1840]. Its type specimen is USNM 45711, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Sphenosphaera troosti by Wahlman (1992) and Wagner (2023).
