Bellerophon (Bucania) platystoma was named by Meek and Worthen (1868) [Bellerophon (Bucania?) platystoma Meek & Worthen 1868]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bellerophon platystoma by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was recombined as Sphenosphaera platystoma by Knight (1945), Wagner (2023).
