Cyrtolites subplanus was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Cyrtolites subplanus Ulrich in Ulrich & Scofield 1897]. Its type specimen is USNM 45792, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cyrtolites (Paracyrtolites) subplanus by Wahlman (1992); it was recombined as Paracyrtolites subplanus by Wagner (2023).
