Helcion subrugosus was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [Replacement for ?Metoptoma rugosa Hall 1847 non ?Patella rugosa Sowerby 1816 ]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Helcionella subrugosa by Knight (1941), Runnegar and Jell (1976), Geyer (1986), Landing and Bartowski (1996).
