Macrocheilus altonensis was named by McChesney (1865) [Macrocheilus altonensis Worthen in Meek & Worthen 1873]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Soleniscus (Macrochilina) altonensis by Knight (1931); it was recombined as Soleniscus altonensis by Keyes (1889), Yochelson and Saunders (1967) and Wagner (2023).
